2023-24 College Football Coaching Carousel

ByAbumchi

Jan 4, 2024

The silly season of hirings, firings, rumors and innuendo is upon us.  Overall, between 500 to 600 coaches change jobs every year in the FBS. Roughly 509 coaches, including 24 head coaches, changed jobs in the 2022-23 cycle, according to 247Sports’ data.

Here are the running updates for the 2023-24 cycle.

Jan. 3

LSU/MissouriMissouri’s Blake Baker has emerged as a leading target for the LSU defensive coordinator job, sources tell 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello and Matt Zenitz. Led by Baker, Missouri has gone from ranking 113th nationally in total defense in 2021 to ranking 25th this season. Baker signed a new contract at Mizzou in December that makes him one of the highest-paid assistants in the SEC. Baker, a former Tulane linebacker, previously worked at LSU as linebackers coach in 2021 and was DC at Louisiana Tech (15-18).

Arkansas: Arkansas is expected to hire Missouri State co-offensive coordinator Ronnie Fouch as wide receivers coach, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Fouch, a former Washington and Indiana State quarterback, previously worked under new Arkansas offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino at both Louisville and Missouri State.

Memphis: Memphis linebackers coach Jordon Hankins has been promoted to defensive coordinator.

LSU: Brian Kelly is making big changes after a subpar season on LSU’s defense. Defensive coordinator Matt House, cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples, safeties coach Kerry Cooks and defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey have been fired. LSU won 10 games for a second straight year under Kelly but the defense allowed 416.6 yards per game and lost shootouts against Florida State, Ole Miss and Alabama. The Tigers allowed 706 yards in a 55-49 loss at Ole Miss in September.

Kansas State: Former Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells is expected to be hired as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator at Kansas State, reports GoPowercat.com’s Tim Fitzgerald. Wells served as an analyst at Oklahoma this season. He would share OC duties with Conor Riley, who 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello reported in December was expected to be promoted to OC.

Hawaii: Timmy Chang has fired three assistant coaches at Hawaii: tight ends coach Ian Shoemaker; defensive tackles coach Eti Ena; and cornerbacks coach Steve Irvin.

Michigan State: Michigan State is expected to hire former Indiana co-defensive coordinator Chad Wilt as a defensive assistant coach, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Before Indiana, Wilt was defensive line coach at Minnesota and coached players like 2022 second-round pick Boye Mafe. Worked with new Michigan State DC Joe Rossi at Minnesota.

North Carolina: Gene Chizik will not return as defensive coordinator at North Carolina next season. Defensive line coach Tim Cross has also stepped down, paving the way for analyst Ted Monachino to coach the position.

UCLA: UCLA has promoted defensive line and outside linebackers coach Ikaika Malloe to defensive coordinator. He takes over for D’Anton Lynn, who left for USC.

South Carolina: South Carolina running backs coach Montario Hardesty will not return next season.

Minnesota: Minnesota special teams coordinator Rob Wenger is leaving to pursue other opportunities, reports FootballScoop. Wenger also served as rush ends coach.

Jan. 2

Tulane: Two members of Willie Fritz’s Tulane staff are expected to be retained by new head coach Jon Sumrall — Carter Sheridan as wide receivers coach and J.J. McCleskey as cornerbacks coach, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Before Tulane, Sheridan worked at LSU and for the New Orleans Saints. McCleskey, a former Tennessee and NFL defensive back, has worked at Tulane since 2018.

Texas A&M/Alabama: Texas A&M is hiring Alabama’s Holmon Wiggins as its wide receivers coach, a source tells 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Among the receivers that Wiggins coached at Alabama: DeVonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy and Jaylen Waddle.

In addition, Texas A&M is expected to hire Tony Jerod-Eddie as a defensive line coach, sources tell Zenitz. The former Texas A&M and NFL defensive lineman was part of Jimbo Fisher’s A&M staff as a defensive line analyst.

Jan. 1

Duke/Florida A&M: Duke is expected to hire Florida A&M head coach Willie Simmons as its new running backs coach under Manny Diaz, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Simmons led FAMU to a 39-8 record the last four years, including 12-1 this season. Zenitz had reported last week that Duke was targeting Simmons for that position.

Dec. 31

Duke: Penn State defensive analysts Gabe Infante and Rick Lyster are expected to be part of Manny Diaz’s staff at Duke, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Infante, a longtime high school head coach in Pennsylvania, was an assistant at Temple before Penn State. Lyster has worked with Diaz since Diaz’s time as the head coach at Miami.

In addition, sources tell Zenitz and The Devils Den’s Adam Rowe that Diaz is expected to retain two members of Mike Elko’s Duke coaching staff — wide receivers coach Zohn Burden and defensive ends coach Harland BowerBower joined the Duke staff with Elko after previously working with Elko at Texas A&M and Notre Dame. He’s developed standout players at Duke like R.J. Oben. Burden joined the Duke staff with Elko after previously working at places like Maryland and Virginia Tech. He’s produced an All-ACC wide receiver each of the last two years.

Missouri: Missouri and head coach Eli Drinkwitz have finalized a contract extension through the 2028 season, the school announced. Drinkwitz, the SEC coach of the year, led Mizzou to an 11-2 record this season.

Dec. 30

Tulane/Troy: Tulane is expected to hire Troy’s Brock Hays as running backs coach and Troy’s Evan McKissack as an offensive assistant coach, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Hays, a former Louisiana high school coach, helped Kimani Vidal run for 1,661 yards at Troy this year. McKissack, a former Troy all-conference offensive lineman and ex-Kentucky graduate assistant, was a fellow part of Troy improving from 111th nationally in total offense in 2021 to 41st this season.

Auburn/Colorado: Colorado defensive coordinator Charles Kelly is expected to leave the Buffs for a job on the defensive staff at Auburn, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Before Colorado, Kelly worked at Alabama and Tennessee and as a defensive coordinator at Florida State.

Dec. 29

Duke/Florida A&M: Duke has targeted Florida A&M head coach Willie Simmons as running backs coach, sources tell 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Simmons has built a 39-8 record over the last four seasons leading Florida A&M, including a 12-1 record this season.
